SVG Diaspora Week was first celebrated in St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 2011 in recognition of International Migrants Day, which is celebrated on December 18th every year. On 4 December 2000, the General Assembly, taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world, proclaimed 18 December International Migrants Day (A/RES/55/93). On that day, in 1990, the Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (A/RES/45/158).
In recognition of this significant milestone, the SVG Diaspora Committee of New York Inc. joins the rest of the world in acknowledging the significant contributions and challenges of migrants across the globe. To show solidarity with all migrants and to bring awareness to this issue, the committee organizes a series on activities over the course of a week. Activities have included press releases, radio and television interviews, lectures, development tours, Diaspora Nine Mornings celebration, church services and a cocktail party. Moreen King-Anthony has been integral to the success of the celebration of Diaspora Week in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
